Sierra Club Backpack and Day Hike Ratings
Outing leaders estimate the difficulty of outing hikes by rating them. Although ratings are subjective, the following system provides a more grounded description of the Group's rating.
ALL hikes require sturdy, ankle-supporting boots. Hikers must always be prepared for various potential weather conditions with proper gear, such as a poncho or rain suit for rain, warm clothes for a cold snap, and a hat and sun protection for hot weather.
Easy Hike
These hikes are suitable for beginning hikers. Daily hike distances range up to 5 miles. The terrain may be rocky, but will be on established trail. The amount of ascent and descent will likely be moderate.
Moderate Hike
These hikes are suitable for the established hiker. Daily hike distances range up to 7 miles. The terrain may be rocky, and will mostly be on established trail. The amount of ascent and descent will likely be steep. Rock scrambling, boulder hopping, and difficult water crossings may be encountered.
Strenuous Hike
These hikes are suitable for the established hiker. Daily hike distances range up to 10 miles. The terrain will likely be rocky, and could be off of established trail. The amount of ascent and descent will likely be steep. Rock scrambling, boulder hopping, and difficult water crossings may be encountered.
A Note on Altitude
If a day hike or a backpack takes place above elevation 9,000 feet, an easy hike could be rated a moderate hike and a moderate hike a strenuous hike. The response to elevation depends on the individual. Aerobic conditioning is a benefit for hiking at high altitude.
