Sierra Club Outings Home

Each of the local groups of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club leads a variety of outings (listed below) both in Oklahoma and other states. Activities include day hikes, backpacks, canoe trips and visits to museums. Each group also does several trail maintenance trips in Oklahoma & Arkansas. (trips listed below)

important notes about outings

  • Leaders and assistants are trained volunteers who work hard to make each trip a success.
  • To sign up for an outing, please contact the leader.
  • In order to participate in one of the Sierra Club's outings, you will need to sign a liability waiver. In the interests of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants make carpooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for carpooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them.  Carpooling, ride sharing or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among the participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this travel.
  • All Sierra Club outings are open to members and non-members alike. You may sign up for outings at the group's monthly meetings or by contacting the leader of the outing by phone or e-mail. Children are welcome on most day hikes when accompanied by an adult. Contact the outing's leader to determine if the outing is appropriate for your child. Pets are not allowed unless the outing is designated as a "pet's permitted outing". Firearms are not allowed. Electronic music devices are not allowed. Outing leaders have the final word before and during the outing they are leading and may set minimum fitness, experience and/or equipment requirements for their trip and may screen applicants accordingly. Contact the outing leader for any questions about a particular outing. Transportation is not a part of the outing. However, car-pooling is encouraged. REIMBURSEMENT for drivers is recommended at a rate of 10 cents per mile per person.

November

  • November 7th & 8th, Saturday & Sunday. Family Camping at Cedar Lake, OK. Lets enjoy the fall colors at Cedar Lake with a family car camping outing. This will be an EASY outing --perfect for Sierra Cubs. The official beginning will be at noon on Saturday at Group Camp Site # 1. We will caravan to the Beech Creek trail about 15 miles from the camp site to enjoy an easy 2.5 - 4 mile leisurely hike before returning for an evening of family camping fun. The official end of the trip will be about 10 AM Sunday as we break camp. Many of us will travel Friday to the camp site and all are welcome to camp together Friday night before the official trip/hike begins on Sat. Also, it is customary when having a Sierra outing in SE OK, to stop at Pete's in Krebs for a group Italian meal in route home. Contact Richard Coker.  richard5823@sbcglobal.net. December

  • December 26 through January 2. Winter backpack in Big Bend National Park that will cross the desert floor just north of the Rio Grande, looping between several remote desert springs. The hike will be strenuous, but the payoff is camping in seldom-seen places and having the entire desert to ourselves at night. The scenery in this area is dramatic peaks, varied arid country vegetation and the geological leavings of the centuries.
